In the “Raising Never-Give-Up Kids” talk, Kathy recommended these books. Support Kathy’s work at LearnDifferently.com by using these links. Thank you.
Paul David Tripp’s Age of Opportunity was a book I read and reread as we raised teens, and I wish I had read it when my oldest was ten. Don’t wait! Chapter 2 is particularly insightful, exploring different ways our personal selfishness [“idols”] can sneak into and spoil our relations with our teens.

John Gottman’s book, Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, helps you train your child to recognize their own emotions and the emotions of others, and to deal with them wisely.

Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein’s book Raising Resilient Children is one I wish I’d read years ago. Written for parents and teachers, it’s got plenty of useful advice for homeschooling parents, too.

Punished by Rewards: The Trouble with Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A’s, Praise, and Other Bribes by Alfie Kohn is a provocative, interesting book on the wrong ways we try to motivate kids–and adults.

Wayne Rice, Enjoy Your Middle Schooler, helped me understand the importance of spending time with my children, in ways that would make them want to keep in touch when they move out!
